Reframing a landscape master
A 1920 × 1080 interview becoming a Reel isn't a resize, it's a reframe: the 9:16 frame is 1080 × 1920, so you're keeping about a third of the original width. Decide which third before you cut, not after.
Keep dimensions even
Most codecs want even-numbered pixel dimensions, and several encoders prefer multiples of 4 or 16. If a calculation lands on an odd number, round to the nearest even value — nobody will see the one-pixel difference.
Ratio is not resolution
16:9 describes shape; 1920 × 1080 and 3840 × 2160 are both 16:9. Match your sequence to the delivery resolution and let the ratio follow, rather than the other way round.
Design for the safe zone
Vertical platforms cover the top and bottom of the frame with interface. Getting the ratio right is step one; keeping captions and logos out of roughly the top 15% and bottom 20% is step two.
What aspect ratio should I use for YouTube?
16:9 for standard uploads — 1920 × 1080 as a baseline, 3840 × 2160 if you shot 4K. YouTube Shorts uses 9:16 at 1080 × 1920.
What size is a TikTok or Instagram Reel?
Both use 9:16, exported at 1080 × 1920. Instagram also accepts 4:5 (1080 × 1350) for in-feed posts, which takes up more feed height than a square.
Can I convert 16:9 to 9:16 without losing anything?
Not without a choice. You either crop into the frame and lose the sides, or scale the whole frame down and fill the space above and below with blurred backing, captions or B-roll. Cropping usually reads better when there's a single subject.
Is 2.39:1 worth using?
It's a stylistic decision, not a technical one. Scope framing signals cinema, but on a phone it shrinks your subject considerably. Use it for trailers and brand films, not for talking-head content.
