23.976 and 29.97 are pulled-down rates: over long timelines they drift against wall-clock time, which is why broadcast deliverables use drop-frame timecode. For social edits, the difference is invisible — just keep the whole project on one rate.
One rate per project
Mixing 24, 30 and 60 fps clips on one timeline creates judder wherever the conform has to invent or drop frames. Pick the delivery rate first and conform everything to it.
Shoot high, deliver low
Filming at 60 or 120 fps and delivering at 24 or 30 gives you clean slow motion without software interpolation. The frame maths above is how you work out exactly how long a retimed clip becomes.
Why 23.976 exists
The fractional rates are a legacy of colour broadcast television. They still matter for broadcast delivery and for syncing to audio recorded on separate hardware; for social video, whole-number rates are simpler and safer.
Cutting by frame count
Ad specs are frequently written in seconds but reviewed in frames. Converting a 6-second bumper to 144 frames at 24 fps makes it obvious how much room a hook actually has.
How many frames are in a minute of video?
1,440 at 24 fps, 1,500 at 25 fps, 1,800 at 30 fps and 3,600 at 60 fps. Multiply the frame rate by 60.
What frame rate should I use for social video?
30 fps handles most talking-head and lifestyle content; 60 fps is worth it for gaming, sport and anything with fast camera movement. 24 fps reads as cinematic and suits brand films.
What is drop-frame timecode?
A counting convention used at 29.97 and 59.94 fps that skips certain frame numbers — not actual frames — so timecode stays aligned with real elapsed time. It matters for broadcast delivery, not for YouTube.
Can I change frame rate after editing?
You can conform a finished sequence to another rate, but the software has to blend or duplicate frames to do it. Deciding before you start always looks better than converting afterwards.
